Living in Costa Rica is has been a truly amazing experience.  We say living in “Rural” Costa Rica because unless you are in a large city, it really is quite rural.  As soon as you get off the main street (paved), many side streets are dirt and seeing people riding their horses into town is a daily occurrence.  Turning the corner and seeing an animal in the road (paved or otherwise) is also something to expect.  So far I’ve seen the following animals in the road:  sloths, dogs, cats, ducks, jaguarundis, coatimundis, cows, horses, and of course the human variety!

The areas of Lake Arenal, Volcano Arenal and La Fortuna are absolutely gorgeous and we feel lucky to live in such a beautiful place!   The lake is at an elevation of 2,014 feet (614m) and the temperatures are pleasant all year long.  The area does not have the typical "wet" & "dry" seasons as many other parts of the country do. This means this area is beautiful, green and has flowers blooming and animals visiting all year long!  If hot is not for you, then the beaches will not be for you.  Check out the highlights of La Fortuna and Lake Arenal areas and let us know what questions we can answer for you!

How you are going to feel about driving in Costa Rica depends primarily on your own experiences driving in rural areas or in different countries.  I’ve had people say that the roads in this area are just like those in the hills or countrysides in the US, the mountains of Canada, and so on.  It also depends on your sense of adventure, if you have a good “navigator-driver” team and your confidence when you are behind the wheel.

These tips are to help you understand some of the basic things that you should know when driving in Costa Rica.
